What is a Google core update?

A core update is a broad change to Google’s ranking systems. It is not a penalty or a targeted action against any site, but a re-evaluation of how well content across the whole web deserves its rankings. Google confirms each one by name (“May 2026 core update” is the most recent), announces when the rollout starts, and confirms when it is complete, typically about two weeks later.

Because core updates re-weigh quality signals across every niche at once, they tend to move rankings the most. That makes them worth planning content work around. Sites that gain tend to demonstrate the things Google keeps saying it rewards: expertise, first-hand experience, factual accuracy, and sources a reader can verify.

How often does Google release core updates?

Across the 27 confirmed core updates since 2018, the average gap between two updates is 115 days, which works out to roughly three to four per year. The median gap is 111 days. But the spread is wide: Google has shipped follow-up core updates as quickly as 28 days apart and has also gone 223 days without one. There is a seasonal habit, too: March is historically Google’s favorite month to start a core update, and late November to mid-December rollouts have appeared repeatedly ahead of the holidays.

How the odds are computed

The predictor treats the question like an actuary would: given how long it has been since the last core update started, what fraction of similar historical situations saw a new update within the next 30, 60, or 90 days? We fit a Weibull survival distribution to the historical gaps (the standard tool for “time until the next event” questions), then scale each future day’s hazard by how often Google has historically shipped in that calendar month.

The result is the cumulative curve you see above: the probability that the next core update has started by any given date, recomputed daily as the gap grows. When Google confirms a new update, the clock resets and the odds start climbing again. It is a forecast in the weather sense: honest about uncertainty and more useful than both “nobody knows” and a made-up exact date. We also score ourselves in public. What to do with a high probability

When the odds climb past 50%, treat it as a content deadline. Updates reward work that is already indexed and settled, so the weeks before a likely rollout are the time to fix thin pages, add real sources to unsupported claims, and publish the strongest version of your most important articles, not the days after rankings start moving.

Nobody outside Google knows the exact date, including us. What we can do is compute honest odds: Google has confirmed 27 core updates since 2018, and the gaps between them follow a clear statistical pattern (roughly every three to four months, with seasonal habits). Our predictor fits that history and recomputes the probability daily, so the odds you see always reflect how long it has been since the last confirmed core update.

How often does Google release core updates?

Since 2018 Google has shipped core updates roughly every 110–120 days on average, or about three to four per year. The gaps vary a lot though: the shortest confirmed gap is under a month, the longest well over seven months. That variance is exactly why a probability forecast is more honest than a single predicted date.

How accurate is this prediction?

It is a statistical estimate built only on Google’s own confirmed update history, not insider information. Think of it like a weather forecast: a 60% probability means that in six of ten similar situations historically, an update arrived in that window. The model cannot foresee Google’s internal plans, but it captures the cadence and seasonality Google has actually followed for years.

What data does the predictor use?
